Jellyfin User Guide

Welcome to Jellyfin! This guide covers the basics of using the server after an administrator has already set everything up.

Logging In

  1. Open the Jellyfin app or visit the server URL provided by your administrator.
  2. Enter your username and password.
  3. Click Sign In.

Home Screen

After logging in, you’ll see your media libraries, such as:

  • Movies
  • TV Shows
  • Music
  • Photos
  • Collections

The content displayed may vary depending on your account permissions.

Watching Movies and TV Shows

  1. Open the Movies or TV Shows library.
  2. Browse or use the search icon.
  3. Select a title.
  4. Click Play.

During Playback

You can:

  • Pause and resume
  • Skip forward or backward
  • Enable subtitles
  • Change audio tracks
  • Adjust playback quality (if available)

Continue Watching

Jellyfin automatically saves your progress.

To continue:

  1. Go to the Home screen.
  2. Look for Continue Watching.
  3. Select the title to resume where you left off.

Searching for Content

  1. Click the search icon (🔍).
  2. Type the title, actor, artist, or album name.
  3. Select the result you want.

Using Favorites

To save content for quick access:

  1. Open a movie, show, or album.
  2. Click the heart or Favorite button.

Your favorites can be accessed later from your profile.

Subtitles

While watching:

  1. Click the subtitle icon.
  2. Choose a subtitle track.
  3. Turn subtitles on or off as desired.

Managing Your Profile

Click your profile picture to:

  • Change your password (if permitted)
  • Change display settings
  • Select preferred language
  • Manage playback preferences

Using Jellyfin on Different Devices

Web Browser

Access through the URL provided by your administrator.

Mobile Apps

Sign in with:

  • Server URL
  • Username
  • Password

Smart TVs and Streaming Devices

Install the Jellyfin app and enter the server information provided.

Common Issues

Can’t Log In

  • Verify your username and password.
  • Check for accidental spaces.
  • Contact your server administrator if needed.

Video Won’t Play

  • Refresh the page or app.
  • Try a different browser or device.
  • Contact the administrator if the issue continues.

Missing Content

You may not have permission to view that library, or the content may still be scanning.

Tips

  • Use Favorites to keep track of content you enjoy.
  • Use Continue Watching to quickly resume shows.
  • Search is often faster than browsing large libraries.
  • Enable subtitles if dialogue is difficult to hear.
